Project Overview
RECLAiM: REal-time Cognitive Learning and Monitoring for Chemotherapy Survivors investigates an EEG-based BCI and neurofeedback framework for monitoring and addressing chemotherapy-induced cognitive impairment (CICI or “chemo-brain”). The project combines longitudinal EEG monitoring, cognitive assessment and interactive neurofeedback training, with the goal of developing a low-cost, wearable and user-friendly system.
Motivation
CICI affects cognitive functions such as memory and attention and may persist after chemotherapy. Early detection remains challenging due to subjective symptoms and confounding factors such as fatigue, stress and depression. EEG provides a non-invasive means of investigating real-time neural changes associated with cognitive decline.
Objectives
- Identify and validate EEG features associated with cognitive decline.
- Monitor cognitive activity across pre-, mid- and post-chemotherapy stages.
- Develop and evaluate a BCI-based neurofeedback game for cognitive enhancement.
- Develop a wearable, reduced-electrode EEG-BCI prototype for improved usability and portability.
Proposed Approach
EEG will be recorded using a 14-channel clinical-grade headset before, during and after chemotherapy. EEG features and ERPs will be analysed and correlated with the Stroop Test and FACT-Cog assessments. Interactive neurofeedback games targeting memory and attention will be developed, followed by investigation of a reduced-electrode wearable prototype.
Potential Impact
The project aims to support more objective monitoring of chemotherapy-related cognitive changes and explore BCI-based neurofeedback as an adjunct approach for cognitive training, while moving towards a practical and accessible wearable system.
