Project Overview
This project investigates EEG-based BCI neurofeedback as a cognitive-training approach for people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), with emphasis on short-term memory, focused attention, covert visuospatial attention and error-related neural responses.
Motivation
MCI patients can experience attention and memory difficulties. Neurofeedback provides a way to use measured brain activity as real-time feedback during cognitive training, creating an active and engaging training loop.
Objectives
- Develop two EEG-based BCI neurofeedback games for cognitive training.
- Target short-term memory, focused attention and covert visuospatial attention.
- Evaluate the developed games initially with healthy participants at SIT.
- Deploy and evaluate the games in the intended MCI population.
Developed Neurofeedback Games
CognoBoost Racer
A neurofeedback-driven game designed to train overt/covert attention, short-term memory and response time.
Recall Mania
A progressively challenging memory-and-attention game designed to train short-term memory and sustained cognitive engagement.
Technical Approach
EEG-derived cognitive features are processed and translated into neurofeedback within the game environment. The training task is designed to adaptively engage the user while linking cognitive performance with measurable brain activity.
Potential Impact
- Enhancement of cognitive skills in patients with attention and memory difficulties.
- Improved quality of life for older adults affected by cognitive decline.
- Potential future deployment of neurofeedback-based cognitive training in larger clinical or community settings.
